Dune Patrol delivers a strange blend of psychedelic rock, gritty grooves, and offbeat storytelling, with a sound that's as unpredictable as the characters behind it. Fueled by fuzzy guitars, wandering basslines, and a healthy disregard for convention, the music drifts between the familiar and the downright bizarre. Hailing from Knowheresville, USA, this ragtag collection of cosmic misfits navigates dead-end jobs, supernatural horrors, and questionable life decisions, all while attempting to make something resembling a respectable rock band. Supersonic, semitonic, and slightly ironic, Dune Patrol is proof that even the universe's biggest screwups can occasionally strike the right chord.
Meet the Band
Bass / front “man”
KELEV RA
Drums / Pest Control / Failed Military Experiment
Originally created as part of a classified military experiment, Kelev Ra was designed for the sole purpose of carrying out high-profile assassinations on behalf of the U.S. government.
Assembled from the "recovered" body parts of various corpses, the origins of his abnormal brain remain classified. He possesses the intelligence of approximately a ten-year-old, placing him well above most percussionists.
His first assignment was to eliminate the then-rising star Whitney Houston.
To prepare him for the mission, government scientists forced Kelev Ra to watch The Bodyguard on an endless loop, hoping repeated exposure would eventually provoke homicidal rage toward Ms. Houston.
The method proved effective for a short period. Unfortunately, during subsequent dry runs, Kelev Ra began displaying uncontrollable homicidal rage toward actor Kevin Costner instead.
Following this unforeseen development, the U.S. government was forced to abandon the program.
Left to wander the United States alone, Kelev Ra was eventually discovered by Dandy, who happened to be looking for someone to split the rent on his dilapidated bathroom above a coffee shop.
As luck would have it, the little science experiment could also hold a solid beat.
And so, Kelev Ra became the drummer of Dune Patrol.
Kevin Costner remains at large.
Guitarist / Parent of band
DANDY
Bass / Vocals / Primordial Space Ooze
Primordial space ooze that's been playing hooky from work. No worries, though. His employers are only bloodthirsty space Vikings. Surely, this won't come back to haunt him in any major way.
Originally coming to Earth for a short break, Dandy overheard some locals playing music and decided to stick around a bit longer.
He's now only 52,595,985 minutes late for his shift hauling resources back to the Unholy Confederacy of the BROman Empire. But who's counting?
As a former space trucker, Dandy is accustomed to sleeping in cramped quarters. He currently resides in Knowheresville, USA, occupying a dilapidated bathroom above a coffee shop, which he shares with Dune Patrol's drummer.
The accommodations are questionable. The rent is probably worse. At least there's music.
MR. E
Keyboards / Classically Trained Musician / Unfortunate Art Student
The newest member of Dune Patrol, and somehow the only one with any formal musical training.
Born in Okinawa, Japan, to an enlisted U.S. military father and a Japanese mother, Mr. E grew up feeling like something of an outsider. Finding refuge in the arts, he developed an admiration for Andy Warhol, eventually modeling much of his artistic identity after the famous pop artist.
Inspired by Warhol's work, Mr. E dreamed of becoming a photographer. His mother, however, had other plans. Having spent years nurturing his considerable talent as a concert pianist, she hoped her son would pursue a respectable career in classical music.
Naturally, he chose art school.
While studying art in the United States, Mr. E attended a music festival where he encountered a shaman selling handmade wire-wrapped jewelry. Being a resourceful young artist with questionable business ethics, Mr. E convinced the shaman to trade one of his creations for a grilled cheese sandwich with a slice of tomato.
Mr. E never delivered the sandwich.
The shaman, apparently having very strong feelings about contractual obligations, placed a hex upon the young artist, transforming his head into a functioning lava lamp.
This presented several unforeseen complications.
For starters, Mr. E no longer resembled the photographs on his passport or student identification. Unable to establish his identity, he found himself stranded in Knowheresville, USA, with no practical means of returning to Japan.
With his artistic ambitions indefinitely postponed, Mr. E took a job at the local can factory operated by GRUB Industrial.
Now stuck working a dead-end factory job with a decorative lighting fixture for a head, Mr. E hopes that joining Dune Patrol might finally bring him the recognition he needs to reclaim his identity and make it back home.
At least his mother can take comfort in knowing he's playing the piano again.
Drummer/ vermin disposal
SPRINKLES
Guitar / Backing Vocals / Band’s Muscle
Born to a teenage mother, Sprinkles learned early on that sometimes you've gotta parent your own parents. Forced to grow up fast, she's become one of Dune Patrol's more hard-nosed members.
But she's not above kicking back and chain-smoking a pack or twelve of cigarettes. Compared to what she used to put into her veins, tar is the least of her worries.
Five years sober from narcotics, Sprinkles' only other noteworthy achievements include being a solid guitar player and a halfway decent vocalist. Not that she'd care what you thought of either.
These days, she's the one keeping the rest of Dune Patrol on track, making sure everyone shows up to enough practices to sound like they've actually rehearsed once or twice.
Heck, she's the only member who's managed to hold down both a steady job and an apartment of her own.
Sure, her job is running the door at the very venue where the band rehearses, but Big Al is cool enough to let them use the space for free. All they have to do is cover the occasional show whenever another band bails.
Which, considering the band's track record, might be the most reliable arrangement any of them have ever had.
